On Thursday evening, December 17th, the Michigan Arson Prevention Committee (MAPC) will host a fund raising gala from 6- 9 p.m. at Opus One, 565 East Larned, Detroit. A silent auction, with a sports theme, is part of the event. We are also requesting a donation of sports memorabilia, goods or services or monetary donations to raise funds to support our arson initiative ‘Wayne Arson Reduction’(WAR). Tickets for the event will be sold in the amount of $25.00 and attendees will be eligible to win a 42” flat screen television, donated from a local business. A number of public officials and community leaders will be in attendance to show united support for this initiative. Detroit currently ranks first in the nation for suspicious property fires. Detroit also has the highest foreclosure rate among the nation’s largest metropolitan areas. An unemployment rate exceeding 15%, a depressed economy, and the above fuel the need for additional resources for fighting arson. Current demand for investigations and prosecutions of arsonists exceeds the capacity. Funding cuts in government agencies compounds this need. A successful event of this nature will help to reinforce the community commitment to this problem and demonstrate a united effort of the public and private persons interested in the control and suppression of arson in Wayne County. The Michigan Arson Prevention Committee, formed in 1973, is Michigan’s front-line task force against arson and acts as a coordinating body between state and local agencies and the insurance industry, marshaling all available facilities and services in a unified effort to reduce loss of life and property caused by arson. Multiple arson training programs, awareness campaigns, and the Arson Reward Program are our ongoing initiatives. We are a non-profit organization, 501C qualified. Our tax identification number is 382623605. The WAR initiative will provide funding to add staffing to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. In addition to space, equipment, tethers and court reporters, the initiative will add a full time Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, a Full Time law enforcement officer and a full time fire investigator dedicated to prosecuting arsonists. Our goal is to raise $1,000,000. We cannot fund this initiative without the support of organizations such as yours. Any donations would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your support of this initiative on behalf of the MAPC and the residents of Detroit and Wayne County. Proper acknowledgement of your name/organization will be identified on the item and prominently displayed during the course of the event and on the MAPC website unless otherwise requested. Tickets or monetary donations can be sent to MAPC, PO Box 86, Detroit, MI 48231-0086 at 810-326-1477.
