Michigan Arson Prevention Committee
Wayne County Arson Reduction Program
On May 5, 2009 the MAPC, along with the National Insurance Crime Bureau awarded the Wayne County Prosecutor's office an initial grant of $155,000 to fund a prosecutor dedicated to prosecuting arson-for-profit cases in Wayne County. The grant will help deter arson in Wayne County by putting those who commit the crime behind bars.
In 2011, 55 percent of the state's arson and suspicious blazes occurred in Wayne County. There are 16 arson/suspicious blazes every day in Wayne County.
Since that time, the program has been very successful. The Prosecutor's Office with help from investigators have been able to secure six guilty pleas and four convictions in 2011.
The Michigan Arson Prevention Committee has been continuing to raise the monies needed to fund the prosecutor. Our thanks to the companies and individuals who donated to the program. Check out the list of sponsors here.
The initiative with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, in combination with the current resources the industry has dedicated to the MAPC, makes this a package for success.
