Michigan Arson Prevention Committee
In Michigan, every third fire is reported as an arson or suspicious blaze. The State Fire Marshal reported that arson and suspicious blazes represent 29 percent of all fires reported in Michigan during 2012. In 2012, there were 6,980 arson/suspicious fires, compared to 10,552 during 2011.
Arson and suspicious fires cost Michigan residents over $155 million last year. These loss figures do not include indirect costs such as medical care, funeral expense, temporary shelter, business interruption, demolition, fire investigation, prosecution, court proceedings, incarcerations and increased insurance premiums.
Arson and suspicious blazes resulted in 49 deaths and another 208 injuries.
