In Michigan, every third fire is reported as an arson or suspicious blaze. The State Fire Marshal reported that arson and suspicious blazes represent 37 percent of all fires reported in Michigan during 2011. In 2011, there were 10,552 arson/suspicious fires, compared to 11,326 during 2010.

Arson and suspicious fires cost Michigan residents over $166 million last year. These loss figures do not include indirect costs such as medical care, funeral expense, temporary shelter, business interruption, demolition, fire investigation, prosecution, court proceedings, incarcerations and increased insurance premiums.

Arson and suspicious blazes resulted in 67 deaths and another 131 injuries.
