Michigan Arson Prevention Committee
In Michigan, every third fire is reported as an arson or suspicious blaze. The State Fire Marshal reported that arson and suspicious blazes represent 31 percent of all fires reported in Michigan during 2015. In 2015, there were 7,528 arson/suspicious fires, compared to 8,753 during 2014.
Arson and suspicious fires cost Michigan residents over $188 million last year. These loss figures do not include indirect costs such as medical care, funeral expense, temporary shelter, business interruption, demolition, fire investigation, prosecution, court proceedings, incarcerations and increased insurance premiums.
Arson and suspicious blazes resulted in 70 deaths and another 149 injuries.
